Police falsely charge nine, Black teenagers with raping two White women aboard a Southern Railroad freight train in northern Alabama

March 25, 1931: Police falsely charge nine, Black teenagers with raping two White women aboard a Southern Railroad freight train in northern Alabama. While all of the Scottsboro Boys would ultimately be exonerated, one of their accusers, Virginia Price testified at trial that her Negro attackers had an almost theatrical penchant for exposition that anticipated the comedian Mike Meyers’ camp parody of cinematic villains in his Austin Powers franchise. Price recalled the group’s ringleader saying to her during the ordeal: “When I put this in you and pull it out you will have a Negro baby.”
